ISSpresso - My Coffee Partner in Space

 The ISSpresso

ISS always fascinates me,

The level of engineering involved, tonnes of innovative stuffs, EVAs, and a long list of enthralling things.

But this thing is taking my interests to the next level.

Its called The ISSpresso

ISSpresso

Yes of course, it's sounds like espresso because its meant to!
Its a coffee machine designed specially to serve coffees 408 kms above in Space.

Launched by SpaceX Dragon on SpaceX CRS-6 (Commercial Resupply Mission) to the International Space Station on April 14th 2015, this thing serves coffees that tastes perfect.

Designed by Lavazza & Argotec, ISSpresso serves: short black (espresso), long black and tea, giving a perfect start to astronaut's day.

On May 3rd 2015, Samantha Cristoforetti drunk the first coffee prepared in micro gravity on board the ISS.

Under the 'Coffee in Space' mission Paolo Nespoli hit the headlines on September 30th 2017 when he celebrated International Coffee Day on board the ISS.

This amazing piece of science & innovation not only prepare a quintessential coffee but also helps to study physical phenomena related to fluid dynamics under high temperature and pressure and analysis of foam formation in microg.

The study of espresso brewing in microg helps to understand how fluids mix with solids under high temperature and pressure up there in LEO.

btw Space food's an interesting area to explore :)

But how this machine works in Space?
ISSpresso is a heavy and more complex machine because of materials and introduced precautions to meet the safety requirements in all phase. As we say, in space the only first priority is safety.

It has steel made hydraulic circuits to sustain high pressure loads and also minimizes the amount of water remaining after the infusion. The set of microswitches on ISSpresso prevents leakage in case of improper closure of the brewer.

The operation method is also very simple and similar to traditional coffee brewers:
Start with inserting the water container,
Then insert the coffee capsule into an opening on the top surface,
Close the small door,
Select the drink,
Attach the drink pouch & start the machine!
Done, your drink will be ready by the time you read this procedure.

A coffee & looking down to Earth from Cuploa is all needed :)

this blog is dedicated to all those people who love coffee just like me.

Lets connect & make today a more fascinating day!

Have a coffee with Astronaut Scott Kelly!

I am a person who don't need an inspirational quote but a coffee!
