JWST : Lets look 13.7 billion years back into time !!

James Web Space Telescope

Hey Explorers !

Earlier today, JWST - James Webb Space Telescope was launched from Centre Spatial Guyanais, French Guiana launch site!

#UnfoldTheUniverse

JWST launched created history & is one of the most important space mission for humanity so far.

Lets look inside this whooping $10 billion project which is set to #UnfoldTheUniverse.

  • A joint project by NASA, ESA (European Space Agency) & CSA (Canadian Space Agency).
  • The total project cost is estimated around $10 billion.
  • It will succeed Hubble Space Telescope; & is 100 times more powerful than Hubble.
                                                                                                           Hubble's mirror vs JWST's mirror
  • Launched on Ariane 5 ECA VA256.

  • Infrared resolutions & sensitivity vision onboard.
  • A 17 years long project, work started from 2004.
  • 18 hexagonal mirror segments made up of pure gold-plated beryllium.

  • JWST works at -394°F, with help of large sunshield (below JWST) made up of silicon & aluminium coated Kapton E.

  • A collective efforts of more than 10,000 people & 14 nations.
  • Mass of 13,584 lb, 20.197 m long & 14.162 m wide.
  • JWST is so powerful that it can look back 13.7 billion years; {fun fact: Big Bang is expected to happened some 13.8 billion years back}.

  • The mass of primary foldable mirror is 705 kg.

  • JWST will be located near L2 ( second Lagrange point) of Earth-Sun system; at 1.5 million km from Earth.
  • The orbit in which the JWST will circle about the L2 is Halo orbit.
source : NASA
  • Instruments on-board : NIRCam ( Near Infrared Camera), NIRSpec (Near Infrared Spectrograph), MIRI (Mid Infrared Instrument), FGS/NIRISS (Fine Guidance Sensors/NEar Image & Slitless Spectrograph).

  • 31 minutes after launch continuing till 13 days, the deployment of solar array, antenna, sunshield, mirror & arm is scheduled.
  • Around a month after from today, the trajectory correction will be initiated to place JWST in Halo orbit at L2 point.

  • The Telescope is named after James E. Webb; NASA's second administrator.
  • JWST will look for the formations of first galaxies formed after Big Bang, & there evolution.
  • The testing phase of JWST was from 2016 - 2021.
  • JWST had a long journey before finally making it into space: development in US, cutting edge technology development in Canada; then packed & took 16 days to transport to French Guiana via sea route; unfolded, tested, folded, put on Ariane & finally on launch base & into space.

  • Major elements of JWST : Spacecraft Bus, ISIM (Integrated Science Instrument Module), OTE (Optical Telescope Element) & MIRI cryocooler.
  • JWST is now the largest space telescope in orbit & will help us #UnfoldTheUniverse.

Lets look into how JWST will be deployed once it is separated from the third stage of Ariane rocket.

& now lets see how the trajectory & orbit of JWST will look in 3D.

And that's how JWST reached space; 17 years after going into development :)
A salute to thousands of people who contributed in any-form to turn this into reality.
This mission is set to explore the never seen beginning of the Universe.
